The big Rodent named Phil causes a lot of commotion and speculation on ground hog day. This is always held on February 2nd. Dating back as far as 1847.
Groundhogs are rodents from the ground squirrel family. His size is 2 1/2 feet long with the last half foot being his tail. He is short with short little legs. He burrows into a hole in the ground and hibernates when winter comes and it gets cold. He is native to Europe and the United States.
Ground Hog Day is celebrated in the United States and Canada, but the largeest celebration takes place in Pennsylvania. Every year a festival is held in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 2. Dignitaries, reporters and common people gather to give tribute to "Punxie Phil." And look forward to his prediction of Spring.
After his hibernation, he comes out of his hole and looks around. If he sees his shadow he runs back into his hole and sleeps for six more weeks. If he does not see his shadow, he stays out and spring is on it's way. This year "Phil" did not see his shadow. Spring should arrive very soon if we beleive in "Phil's" prediction
