The Strengthening Families Program was created to help parents improve child management skills, relationships with their child, and communication within the family. Based on a development model, the program believes that increasing a family’s protective processes while decreasing its potential risk factors can alter a child’s future. The program also aims to delay the onset of adolescent alcohol and substance abuse by improving family practices.
SFP is evidence-based, which means research proves the program produces positive results. It also means the program is supported by a federal agency or respected research organization, and has been included in their life of effective programs.
SFP sessions are conducted with regard to Fidelity of Implementation, meaning:
- The program focuses on the specific age group or grade level
- The facilitator has been trained to use the program most effectively
- The facilitator implements all of the activities in the same way they were implemented in the research
SFP consists of seven interactive sessions conducted over seven consecutive weeks. During the first half of the session, parents and youth meet separately, but work on similar skills. During the second hour, the youth and parents work together to practice skills, play games, and do family projects. The program focuses on setting appropriate limits, using consequences, protecting against substance abuse, handling peer pressure, reaching out for help, understanding family values, and building family communication.
The content of the program is designed to:
- Enhance parenting skills and promote effective parenting styles
- Build life skills in youth, including stress management, conflict resolution, and communication
- Strengthen family bonds, positive communication, and the ability to solve problems together
