By the time you are a junior or senior in high school you have heard all about the two major school sponsored dances. These two dances are Homecoming, and Prom. Homecoming is in the fall. At my high school we have a homecoming football game, Pep Rally and even a parade. The second and most fun of the two, I think, is the Prom.
If you were to look up the meaning of prom in a dictionary you would find a definition similar to; A formal dance, held at the end of an academic year for high schools and colleges. Planning for this event begins much earlier. You can see dresses starting to appear in department stores as early as the first week in January. The girls get all excited and want to find the perfect dress. Boys don’t have a lot to worry about, all they have to worry about is a tux, tie, vest, shoes and that’s it. (as far as attire)
With prom comes the stress of who you are going with, who will be asking you to go, or what friends will you go with, or if you are even going to go at all? Then comes the stress of how much money you want to spend on going to Prom? What color, what style of dress is one of the top stressors for the girls with the start of prom season?
I am a junior, and I am going to my high school’s prom on May 15th. I was asked to go with a date. So that’s something different for me. For homecoming I went with a group of friends and we had a girls night. This is something new, and will be really fun.
Having a date for prom means we will have to coordinate what color we will be wearing. That means his vest or tie has to be the color of my dress. We will also have to talk about if we are going to dinner, with his friends, my friends, all one huge group, or alone. We will also have to get pictures taken before the dance, just us alone, then with our friends as well.
Having a date is a big deal for some people, but for others it’s not a big deal. It is a really nice way to just dance and talk to your date for a few hours. It is way better than sitting at home on a Saturday night with nothing to do.
What does it mean to me having a date for the prom? It means someone really cared to take the time and to think about me and to ask me. I also think for me it will be a great way to build a friendship. It has given me one more reason to be happy about going to the prom. I am really happy because the guy I wanted to be asked by asked me, so I am on cloud nine (as the adults would say). I am just happy, it means, having a good time. Now I have someone to slow dance with. Instead of taking a break and getting that drink of water or sitting and rubbing my feet because my feet are sore from my heels. I think the main reason is that someone really wanted me to be part of their night come prom, and that means so much to me.
I hope if you are going to your Prom you have a Great time!!!
